Local Fire Department Urges Caution:
Candle Safety Tips to Prevent Holiday Fires
As the season of longer nights and festive gatherings approaches, the Fire Department is issuing a crucial reminder to residents about the safe use of candles, a leading cause of preventable home fires.
Recent national statistics from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) underscore the danger. Candles are responsible for an estimated 7,400 home fires in the United States annually, resulting in dozens of deaths, hundreds of injuries, and millions in property damage.
"While candles create a beautiful ambiance, it's vital to remember they are an open flame," said Fire Chief David Miller. "A moment of distraction can lead to a lifetime of regret. Our goal is to ensure everyone can enjoy their holiday season safely."
To prevent tragedy, firefighters and safety experts recommend the following essential precautions:
Never Leave Unattended: Extinguish all candles before leaving a room or going to sleep. This is the single most important rule.
Keep Clear of Combustibles: Place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn, including curtains, bedding, furniture, decorations, and loose clothing.
Use Proper Holders: Always place candles in sturdy, non-tip holders specifically designed for candle use. Ensure the holder is large enough to catch dripping wax.
Keep Out of Reach: Place candles well out of the reach of children and pets. Never leave a child alone in a room with a burning candle.
Avoid Drafts and Vents: Keep candles away from drafts, vents, and air currents, which can cause uneven burning, excessive dripping, or rapid flame movement.
Trim the Wick: Before lighting, trim the candle wick to about ¼ inch to prevent high flames, sooting, and dripping.
Extinguish Carefully: Use a candle snuffer to extinguish the flame, as it’s safer than blowing, which can spread hot wax and sparks. Ensure the wick is no longer glowing before leaving it.
Stop Before It's Empty: Discontinue use of a candle when about 1/2 inch of wax remains in a container or 2 inches for pillar candles to prevent heat damage to the surface.
Chief Miller also suggested considering safer alternatives. "Battery-operated flameless LED candles have come a long way. They offer the same warm glow without the fire risk, making them an excellent choice, especially in homes with young children or pets."
The Fire Department encourages all residents to test their smoke alarms monthly and ensure they are installed on every level of the home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas.
"By following these simple steps, we can all significantly reduce the risk of a devastating fire," Chief Miller concluded. "Let's make safety a part of our holiday tradition."
